Tuesday 19 September 2006 HISTORICAL LAUNCH OF THE IB AT THE RIDINGS – IN THE WORDS OF THE STUDENTS September, this year, saw the launch of the International Baccalaureate Diploma [IB] at The Ridings High School; the first state school in the South West to offer this qualification as an alternative to A Levels. It has already attracted students from local schools, Europe and North America. For three years, The Ridings has been investigating the qualification and preparing for its launch. Teachers have required special training as the IB is delivered in a slightly different way to the traditional A Levels. Students are required to take one subject from each of six groups; 1st Language, Mathematics, 2nd Language [German, French and Spanish], Individuals and Society [History or Geography], Experimental Sciences [Biology and Physics], Arts and Electives [Art, Music, Chemistry and Psychology]. Two students on the course, Lindsey Brittles and Jo Yeoman, agree that this is a good thing. “We like the fact that we can take more subjects by doing this course. It keeps your options open for the future if you are not sure what you want to do, which is great!” |
