PRESS RELEASE

THE RIDINGS HIGH SCHOOL HELPS LAUNCH BBC’S NEW WORLD CLASS WEBSITE

The BBC has launched a new website www.bbc.co.uk/worldclass which encourages schools to put themselves on the map.

As part of the launch, BBC Breakfast News visited The Ridings High School in Winterbourne to witness a global link with a school in Karachi, Pakistan. The school is recognised nationally for its use of video conferencing in establishing high-level educational links. It has already represented Europe in a prestigious United Nations’ video conference, featuring Kofi Annan.

This morning’s conference was organised by Mike Griffith of Global Leap an organisation which was set up five years ago to develop global education through the medium of video conferencing. Students and staff arrived at 6.30am to take part in this exciting event.

Dr Gibson, Head at The Ridings High School, said “it is a great honour to be selected for such a prestigious event.”

Mr Ford, Head of History, said, “The experience was phenomenal. It is amazing how advancements in technology have enabled schools to communicate with each other so easily. Not only does it allow the students to gain a cultural experience, but the knowledge gained also helps academic studies.”

Two students, Fabien Seshadi and Emma Rees were lucky enough to be interviewed by BBC reporter Sophie Hutchinson, and they both felt it was an experience they would never forget.
